Alcoholic 12:12 - Dec 16 with 5926 views1983

The old man died way too young because he was an alcoholic and we also lost our house because of this, a man who I adored as a child and hated as an adult.

Now we are watching our good friends going through the same thing, he is a very smart man, not short of a few bob, a great wife, nice kids finically sorted for life and as straight as they come and most probably never even had a parking ticket in his life but now he's destroying it all and will down a bottle of wine in seconds and doesn't give two flucks for anyone so very sad!

If their parents were alchies or addicts, they would probably have had a traumatic childhood and would carry that burden into adulthood and at some stage, turn to substances themselves to forget

You are entitled to your honest opinion but I will go with those experts I have actually spoken to, bearing in mind my mother was an alcoholic, my father drank heavily and I too came close to having a problem.

Yes that's an article I linked. It disproves what you claim.

"Instead, an enormous number of factors, ranging from early life trauma to genes that code for metabolic enzymes, have a role in how the genetics of addiction unfold"

In a nutshell. Stop talking about stuff you don't know anything about and let threads stay on topic.

They don’t know though. They can’t identify any genes. Yes, there is often a family trait, but that would be down to family problems, trauma, upbringing or environment, not anything hereditory

Also from that article.

"and it seems that much of this risk is carried genetically"

They do know. You don't.

Bearing in mind your earlier posts where addiction was entirely down to personal circumstances, you've done a wonderful job of proving yourself wrong.

But determining exactly what it is that addicted parents pass down to their children has proved difficult. Scientists have searched for decades for an 'addictive personality' that leaves someone vulnerable to drug problems, but without success. Researchers have tried to identify the genes responsible for addiction, and they have examined the role of early exposure to trauma. Yet they have failed to isolate a single genetic factor that reliably distinguishes between the 10–20% of people who try alcohol or illegal drugs and get hooked and the majority who do not.

You obviously missed the example of the US troops in Vietnam

"No there's not.An addiction is mental; not physical. Gambling is an addiction, it's not physical."

This is your comment in response to there being a genetic link. Genes are physical by the way. Even that response proves it

Stop trying to derail a well intentioned thread with your idiotic and uneducated views.

This topic is about addiction..

Get it right. I stated that ppl certain ppl were no more susceptible to addiction than others, and that it was down environmental reasons. Not sure what Putin has to do with this

No you didn't. You said addiction isn't physical but mental. You didn't mention certain people at all.

You completely derailed what could have been a helpful thread for some.

Stop trying to be controversial, you're not.

In which case why does the body have a physical reaction, we call it withdrawal and it has mental AND physical components.

Not saying that at all. It's. The addiction itself isn't physical. If any substance was actually addictive, we would all become alcoholics or druggies, but that's not the case. Millions worldwide drink booze and take recreational drugs without any ill effects at all

Correct! I have sampled alcohol and cigs , and I’m not addicted. Not tried the other, but know someone who has and stopped easily enough. However, he has had many problem's and has been on and off many substances. There is no drug of choice for him, he get’s what he can.

Addiction is a thing to be reviled against and educated to kids.
Your best life is what you should be addicted to. I speak from experience.
I've known champion surfers, successful sportsmen, intelligent businessmen, soldiers etc.and my cousin who drank herself to death. When their purple patch ends they slip into a blanket rather than face real world. Alcoholism isn't a disease, it's a means of dealing with your disease.
