You think one ageing reservist between the sticks, albeit seemingly a good and competent pro, is going to solve our defensive horror shows when we're even lightier and flimsier at the back this season than last, somehow make up for our feather-light midfield, and atone for our one striker with Zamora-eseque stats and a couple of rookies as back-up? I guess I'll have some of what you're on!
Put it this way, Chair and Willock are going to have to play out of their skins this season just to give us a fighting chance, while Smyth will need to be turbo-charged from start to finish. Try as I might, and I cling to grief-stricken Richards somehow shaking himself out of his funk of mourning and turning into the Champ's Stan Bowles, I just can't see it. He has either been instructed to do that, or panicked. We do need another CB unfortunately.

Thought he linked up well with Chair and Willock.
I'd like to see Chair at 10 as he's better there and would be close to Willock at 11, need the two of them sparking off each other, but that leaves Richards at 7, which isn't ideal for him.

Completely agree. I know it's a pre-season friendly but it's an opportunity to make a statement. Boss that midfield, get stuck in, play some blinding passes. It's a League Two side.
Sadly, he just seems to have one setting and seems to watch the match going on around him. He should look how Chair is always busy and looking for the ball. It wasn't just Dozzell yesterday but I want them moving and showing for the ball. We're still far too passive and static.

Lots of people not happy with the negativity on here which I understand mostly, but ultimately it’s being realistic about what we can see with our own eyes.
Of course we all want this team to do well and play exiting football and we don’t expect miracles but we want it to be fun to watch and to win some games.
Fully aware that pre season is not relevant really to the season ahead and dying by your sword either way this time of year is bonkers.
But the reality is simple….we struggled to stay up last season and have lost 9 of that team and brought in 3 …who at the moment you wouldn’t say are upgrades.
So we are 6 squad members down, and short in depth and quality all over the pitch. It’s no being over dramatic, overly pessimistic or just miserable …it’s the facts .
We are well short and with at least one of Willock and Chair going we’ll be even shorter.
You could even look into Field not being captain at the start yesterday as a suggestion he could be off. I hope that doesn’t happen of course but we are way way way short of anything resembling enough going on what we’ve seen from the remaining members of the squad and the ‘second’ string waiting to come in.
Couple of which look ok actually but are they ready right now ?
No, they are not.
Inevitably players will come in and the sooner the better but flipping hell they will have to be strong, talented leaders to drag this bunch to mid table security .
And lastly , the club don’t do themselves any favours . One of the first things we hedge to sort out is our wretched home form . So what’s happening now is a disgrace . No pre season friendliest at home ..at all . And why because the club wanted to make Pittance on renting the stadium out to fans and directors to have kick arounds on, weeks after the season finished. Because idiots running Round drinking beer and kicking a ball around is much more important ? (I’m not taking about the charity matches -they happened beforehand )
It’s meant we have 4 difficult away games in the first 5 which means we are already on the back foot in what is a very difficult season anyway . Head in hands time |  | | |

The lack of genuine chances created - even in that first half with all of the possession and nice link-up play - was a little concerning.
We looked weak down the right (nothing new). Gubbins looked worried every time the ball came in his general direction and looked to get rid in any direction he could.
It's clear we're three/four starters short, and the squad is very light.
What was encouraging was that it wasn't just 'ping it in the channel, squeeze, cross', as we were led to believe. There will be a lot of that, I'm sure, but it was good to see Gaz allow the team to play.

Based purely on match reports and the comments on here, I don't think yesterday told us anything fresh.
The first choice XI, which will be most if the first half team, is just about OK. We won't be challenging the top half, but should/may have enough to avoid relegation. However, unless there are critical personnel upgrades, the back up is really weak and inexperienced. |  |
