I note that the 'You never see a poor bookie' adage has taken a bit of a knock this week with William Hills announcement of a £722m loss for 2018.

I will consider a conditional acceptance of an apology from the beeding hearts on here who were quite adamant that myself and others were just winning off other mug punters rather than gaining a certain degree of satisfaction of rinsing the bookies on a reasonably regular basis.

So you think that’s because they’ve lost more to punters?

Mate, seriously?

It’s far more likely to do with lots of other factors e.g. new regulations, reducing revenue and going for growth

Stop kidding yourself, gambling IS a mugs game

Looks that way - 10 second google:

"The bare figures announced for last year looked grim, with William Hill posting a statutory loss of £722 million, but that was down to a major write down of their betting shop business of nearly £883m prompted by the government's decision to reduce FOBT stakes to £2 and had been flagged up last year.

Adjusted operating profit was down by three per cent to £266.8m, in line with expectations, the bookmaker said, while revenue rose two per cent to £1.62 billion."

Seems just an accounting dodge . Post a one downgrading of assets to show a loss of £780 million. This means that they can offset that loss against the next 4 years profits of £200 million a year, total £800 million saving themselves around £20 million in corporation tax for 4 years.

As we've discussed before on here, once the 2 pound max spin on the machines comes in, at least a third, maybe as many as half will definitely close.

Those machines & fruities should only be available in Casinos, regardless of potential job losses.

A couple of months ago as part of my job I was given a tour of a very high end London casino in Mayfair and was given an explanation of how they fought and won a legal claim for failing to pay out to a punter. The subsequent ruling effectively changed the legal definition of theft.

The one thing that stuck in my head was how they knew the punter was cheating......”because we always win.”

Gambling should be seen as a form of entertainment, if you want to spend your hard earned on giving yourself a thrill on the basis that you may win occasionally then why not. But it should be treated as just that a form of entertainment like the cinema, theatre or going to watch the Swans.

Life is an adventure or nothing at all.

I agree.

I enjoy a game of poker and have been playing, occasionally, online for quite a few years. I have kept a record of how much spent and how much won and have done ok over quite a long period of time. I look at it as a source of enjoyment but it is easy to see how one with poor discipline could get addicted.

Very good post.

I’m not into banning it and I’ve had a flutter once in a blue moon

However the plethora of adverts and wide spread gambling culture is a massive issue

I see

So we can put a £722m loss in 2018 down to the ( welcome) introduction of a £2 limit on FOBTs in April 2019?

Good post. It's not my thing really apart from the occasional race day, but I don't see the problem with gambling as long as it's affordable and doesn't start to control people (e.g. either through addition or through illegal activities to try and scam the bookies - e.g. match fixing).
