Some of the best quality coal found anywhere in the world was hewn from the valleys of South Wales, absolute travesty that the mines and their communities were decimated .
My old man worked for the NCB for 40 years, not long after the strikes, pit after pit was closed, never to reopen.Awful time for the miners their families and the communities they served.

I remember the figures at the time. Thatcher wanted to remove the subsidies while Germany for example was subsidising at £18 a ton for inferior quality coal. Both my grandfathers and my step grandfather were miners and they all suffered in later life from horrendous respiratory problems and it got all three of them in the end. The forty woodbines a day probably didn’t help neither. |  |

Correct. The best quality coal was powering our navy, stealing natural resources around the world whilst those who mined the coal were living in hovels in penury. That's what powered the f*cking 'Empire.'

Crossing the picket line in those times was a regular thing, and welcomed by the miners as they knew that someone had to keep the pumps etc working, if they failed and the mine was flooded that was it finito.Maitenance was key during the strikes.
