It's one game.
Peoplw were going mad after Tom Hitchcock's match winner a few years back... not even sure where he is now. Let's all calm down a bit. Brilliant that it worked and he played well and very glad for him. And let's celebrate it. But let's also keep a tiny bit of perspective too.

He played like that on his Under 23 debut away to Charlton on Monday 16th October. 3-0 down at HT he tore them a new one and we won 5-4. He then played 4 days later at home to Ipswich u23s where he was almost anonymous. His third game was over five weeks later on 25th November against Palace u23s, where he had a half decent game. But yesterday's first team debut was something else. I felt he looked hungry from the word go. I really felt for him first half when he put that chance well over the bar. Had he been taken off before getting the winner , I'm certain this thread would be about how crap he was. That's what happens with a lot of our fan base.

good for the lad that he played so well and scored but are we that desperate that we are waxing lyrical over a rough diamond ? comparisons to Paul Goddard and long term contracts , do me a favour
let the lad just play and see how he does

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

If you were to look at the difference between him and Hitchcock, apart from the electric pace, it was the intelligence of his play on and off the ball and I guess that is what is so exciting, He made Owenesque runs across the back 4, always making sure he was onside, he pressed well, and watched and linked well with Smith. He stood out in truly rotten first 35 minutes for rangers and excelled in the second half. Clearly has a football brain in the same way Freeman and Robinson do.

Needs to be managed well, now, got to get the balance right, but I see no way back for Washington now, this kid looked better in every department

Absolutely delighted for young Paul. I have been keeping an eye out for your results every week, and obviously to see if he was in the matchday squad. To hear he was starting yesterday was amazing, but the fact that he scored and what turned out to be the winner was even better!

Interested to hear your thoughts, as I recall when he signed, I had told this forum how quick and direct he was, and will give 100% going forward as well as tracking back, with no fear of being tackled, tackling..

Cheers.

Cheers for that Linfield. You obviously rated him very highly hence your post. Hope he continues in the same vein.

It's no coincidence that with Paul in our squad last year, we won the league and cup double. Without Paul, we find ourselves in 5th place, some 16 points off the pace!

Its good to see players from our small Irish League getting the recognition they deserve and hopefully he can continue to progress and we will see him in a NI shirt, very soon!

I think Manning will come good!... Probably having 2nd season jitters like many other young pros experience.

Let's not be cute about this... the boy's been shoddily treated.

I'm reading this and almost crying.

After putting myself through that Millwall debacle on Friday, another no show from the forwards and to cap it all, traingate, decided to take it easy yesterday, go for a walk with the wife and a pint in a country pub. You just know this would happen.

Holloway OUT.

Love the look of Smyth - the confidence and exuberance we've been missing up front.

Re Manning, I have agree, I think the club's management of his career this season has been abysmal. Whatever his form you have to give him enough minutes (some minutes) to get back into the groove. His quality is undeniable.

Poll: Should JFH get the sack?

Have to agree with this, there must have been room for Manning in the 1st team this season, with injuries and suspensions. He's hardly appeared on the sub's bench.
He was a breath of fresh air last season.

I also took great joy from the fact he was happy taking on defenders literally twice his size physically. Putting himself on top of the keeper at corners ensuring that the ref had to get involved; could have led to a penalty.

Also challenged for headers that he'd never win but just let the defenders know he was there, something Washington totally fails to do. Led to Connolly making a couple of poor clearances.

Then to pick up a yellow for persistent fouling was like the cherry on the cake.

Very encouraging debut.

Interesting point there. It was obvious from very early on that the ref had Smyth marked down as the aggressor. Hardly a foul given in his favour, but quickly penalised for similar offences throughout the game.

Players in his position playing better, he's not playing quite as well as last season.

Happens all over but only here do we make it into some sort of drama/conspiracy!

well if it makes you feel better it was only 'buzzing' after we equalised.

The first 40 mins was the worst football (from both sides) I have seen this season.

At one point it was so quiet you could hear Ollie and Warnock from the ER stand........it got better though!

Yeh the first half was basically two tired teams taking long throws at each other in front of a hungover crowd.

At least Ollie finally solved the tactical riddle of the long throw specialist and the 7ft lummox. Tune in next week for the double trequartista gegenpress (apparently).

It was interesting that Robinson has resumed throw-in duties. When he was first switched to CB, he didn't take any, for quite a few games. It was like as a full-back he could risk being left isolated by the oppo breaking, but as a CB he couldn't risk it. It deprived us of an important part of our armoury, in my opinion.
