Gibraltar is more important to the UK than it is to Spain, if Spain vetoes any deal over Gibraltar they will have to justify to 26 other members why Gibraltar is more important than a (assumed) beneficial trade deal because I'm certain the UK would take no deal rather than compromise on Gibraltar. Spain won't veto anything over Gibraltar. |  |

The Spanish probably shouldn't be able to veto any EU/UK deal over Gibraltar. But the fact that they are suggesting such a thing indicates how complex the Brexit negotiations can be. And, don't forget, Gibraltar is just a minor consideration compares with all the other things that need to be agreed. |

The reality is that both sides have just stated their opening positions in a negotiation. That is what they would like in an ideal world, their aims and visions of utopia. It is going to be a long game and their will be movement by both parties.
If there isn't sufficient movement by our European partners then we will have the no deal scenario which nobody really wants but we need to be prepared for.
Don't imagine that this will be played by the rules either. As in most negotiations the real bargaining will be done outside the room in secret meetings. Anyone thinking that we and/ or some of the remaining EU nations, and other countries, will not be discussing items of mutual interest in unofficial bilateral talks, is living in 'cloud cuckoo land'. For us to not do this would leave us very exposed in a no deal situation.
This will undoubtedly go the full distance, any deal being struck at the eleventh hour on the last day. It is nigh on impossible to know how it will turn out but I would think that we have a slight edge in that we can walk away. | | | |

Of course, what many media reports seem to miss is that there is no guarantee that a deal has to be struck at all, or will be struck at all. Another possibility is that in the aftermath of failed negotiations Britain just leaves at the end of the two years. Naturally, this would be irresponsible in the extreme, particularly with regards to Britain's post-colonial minefields of Gibraltar and Northern Ireland, but I would not rule out the prospect of Britain's Tories running out of time and simply telling Johnny Foreigner that the proposed deal on the table is not good enough, so goodbye. |  |

This is probably true. Mrs May keeps telling Britain and indeed Europe the government has plans for Brexit, yet won't reveal what they are. This is because they probably don't know themselves and the whole shambolic process will no doubt reveal itself in two years time if not before. The only monkeys to show themselves up for this, won't be the ones residing in Gibraltar [ they probably have more sense ], but the ones you find scratching their armpits and prowling the floors of Westminster week in, week out. |  |

The deal will be put to both Houses in Westminster. May has a slim majority and it is possible, if unlikely, that our Parliament will reject it as not being good enough. | |
