I like quite reasonable amount of his songs but I was never into him, as it were. Though I can understand his contribution to music and people's lives. He certainly was someone who did a lot in his life and had a passion for music rather than most of today's wannabes who just use music as a conduit for what they really want, attention & fame.
Loved his music growing up, had all the classics on vinyl, up to Let's Dance. Drifted away a little from his subsequent stuff until recently, when upon listening to his last few albums I found his music just as brilliant as ever, if typically different.
During the Let's Dance tour he played a date in my old home town of Dublin, must have been mid-1980's I guess. I was in a bar & restaurant I used to frequent (more for the bar!) when he walked in from nowhere with Peter Frampton and two other members of the backing group. The eyes were the first thing you notice, unmistakable.Despite standing quite close, I was too starstruck to say a word, but a young woman ran up and tried to put her arms around him…he gently pushed her away, saying - in that unmistakable voice - "I'm off the menu tonight, love". The management quickly seated them in the restaurant area away from obvious view. I went home shortly after, but regret not staying : apparently, the bar staff told me the next day that he'd stayed for ages and given an impromptu performance on the venue's piano.
its funny really because if you had woken up on any give day in the 70's to find out that Bowie had died you wouldnt have been shocked at all.
People stared at the makeup on his face Laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace The boy in the bright blue jeans Jumped up on the stage And lady stardust sang his songs Of darkness and disgrace
Tributes on the main BBC news abut over the top. Didn't do it for Lemmy did they ?
with respect Bowie was a global superstar that had been at the top of his and many other games for nearly 50 years.
I think Lemmy had a fair mention; but to compare him to Bowie is probably disrespectful to both artists, given his more restricted appeal and artisitic contribution.
on a lighter note Radio 6 covering this with both barrells, old interviews, lots of relevant guests and plenty of tunes.

For 50 year olds like me, BBC Radio 6 is the best on any given day.

i like it but the PA kicks off occassionally and we revert to radio 1....
...but when on the day of the passing of one of the greatest musicians ever they play shitty George Ezra - Budapest, and Hozier - Take Me To Church; I had to pull rank.
wouldn't even mind if they were current tunes but both must be 18 months old and relegated to Radio 2 by now.

Sorry mate but is this Radio 6 you are talking about? I have never heard shitty George Ezra - Budapest, and Hozier. Ever.
Yesterday morning I was in the kitchen strumming the guitar and singing 'John I'm Only Dancing'. Then I popped over the road to the swimming pool cafe to use the wifi. I'd left the coffee on the stove. When I got back the alarms were bleepin and all the coffee had boiled away. Flat still smells of burnt coffee.
John, don't get me wrong I'm only ... trying to make sense where there isn't any. Like a lot of people I'm really cut up today.
RIP Ziggy/ Starman/ Thin White Duke/ Davy Jones/ David Bowie ... your music will live forever.
