A Cautionary Tale 20:38 - Jul 30 with 2599 viewsNogginthenog

I said on a previous thread that my sister has been diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately in her case it turned out to be incurable simply because her GP and a consultant failed to get her scanned. Now she is languishing in a bed in Ty Olwen. Our family devastated by the whole sorry affair.

Now I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else as the anguish for all concerned is immense.

So I would implore you to treat any suspicious abdominal pains with the utmost caution. Females over 50 years old who have symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome for the first time in their lives or changes in toilet habits or swelling of upper
abdomen need to be checked thoroughly. Blood tests can help of course but they do not always reveal other things that may be going on.

Doctors obviously have a duty of care and are usually very professional but they are not infallible. If you feel you are not getting anywhere with the GP and you still have suspicions that something is not quite right, seek a second opinion or pay for a private scan. It could just save someone's life.

Regrettably we have had to learn the hard way So get your family members genned up on female cancers and male cancers and heed the warning signs and give yourselves the best chance of survival by early and correct diagnosis.

So so sorry to hear that news Noggin.

You may or may not know from a separate thread that I've been experiencing some problems with IBS like symptoms for a while now. I've had bloods and stool etc and am currently waiting to see a gastroenterologist on 6th August. I'm probably ok in that regard, I'm only 30 and I understand it's extremely rare and unlikely that someone of my age would get bowel cancer, but my nan thankfully survived it so it's in the family and reading your post as well, I'm now going to push and prove the gastroenterologist on the issue just to be thorough.

All the best to you and your family.

Thoughts are with you and your family at this terrible time.

A friend went to his GP last September with bowel problems and the doctor diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome and put him on some medication, things didn't get any better and he was eventually sent for scans in May when it was established that he has cancer. He has since undergone two very painful bouts of surgery and it is touch and go whether he will survive.

As you say, early diagnosis is vitally important, listen to your body and if you are not happy get a second opinion.

Sorry to hear your news. Fortunately, a close family member is a specialist in cancers. Someone is always bending her ear.
But due to her job/position, if one of us needs help, we don't have to wait too long. And yes it's not fair but it happens everywhere.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
