Would rather see the ox in the first couple ahead of lallana.
Chamberlain seems to perform in big games, look at his performance against brazil for england and he was awesome of at the allianz for arsenal. he's a must start for me, as he could produce something special. |
You make a good point.
For me though, I'd rather see him and Barkley come on later on to add something different. Although Ox and Sterling on the wings would be a good option too. |  | | |

Henderson seems to be in an awful lot of peoples starting 11. Yes he's had an ok season but he's played 8 England games in 4 years (2 starts) and never started a competitive game? Wilshire to start for me who is class personified. In my opinion. And I know I have Lallana in my starting 11 who has even less England game time - but for me he's been the Premier league stand out English creative midfielder this season and must be thrown in at the deep end. Henderson is used to playing with the likes of Sterling, Sturridge, Johnson etc. as I said earlier in this thread.
Henderson's been fantastic this season, whereas Wilshere has been OK at best and also missed the last two months of the campaign through injury. |  |

Henderson to start over Wilshire, who'll bring quality fresh impetus to the midfield in much the same way as he did during the cup final. Wenger knows him better than anyone, and didn't want to risk him over 90 minutes.

Yes Wilshire did excellent in the final when he came on. Guess we will find out on Friday, where I imagine Roy will want to play his starting 11 . Who knows - someone might do a Gazza in 90 and force themselves into his starting plans if they play well enough. Looking forward to seeing more of Ross Barkley. | |

Listening to Roy today and his various interviews and press conference he gave his biggest hint yet that Jack Wilshire will be starting v Italy alongside Gerrard. Thanked Arsene Wenger at length for getting Wikshire right for the World Cup rather than rush him back for Arsenal and Roy said he is ready and raring to go. Don't think he would have spoken so much about him if he wasn't key to his plans. | |

At international level we've been found out time and again playing two centrally. Gerrard's taken to his new role at Liverpool so well because of the options around him when his team are in possession - it's not an issue about being good defensively and getting people in there when the opposition have it, but not letting them have it in the first place. To do that you need players providing angles for passes in the centre of the park, then working it out wide when necessary.
Look at Dale when we've been at our best in a similar situation: Cavanagh had the ball and had Allen and Lund as options around and in front of him. You can still have the width - Sturridge did that job at times for Liverpool if Suarez went up top, even Rooney's comfortable doing it. We need to worry about our own ball retention, not stopping the opposition because possession, more importantly the lack of it, is the main reason England fall short at major tournaments.

Gerrard and Henderson alongside each other and a forward dropping off has not given enough passing options. Far too often it's become 4-4-2 with two strikers up against centre halves. Won't work at a World Cup.
But our centre halves will always score at set pieces.
However, Sterling has illustrated he understands the role ahead of a midfield two much better than anyone else. [Post edited 30 May 2014 21:31]
