I'm a bit mixed on this because whilst the top level achievements are amazing, the grassroots funding is atrocious and less kids than ever are taking part in organised sport.

There's also a bit of a "winners only" mentality that has developed. There are UK athletes in T&F disciplines who have met IAAF standards for Olympics qualification that have then not been taken by UK Athletics because they are not felt to be medal contenders, which just feels completely wrong to me. If you've earned the right to go, then you should be able to and represent your country, even if it is unlikely you'll win.

So, the successes are fantastic, clearly something is going well at the top top end, but I'm not convinced its so great all the way through, which was meant to be one of the main points of the London 2012 "legacy".

Season ticket question
at 21:34 1 Aug 2024

I don't think QPR tickets are popular enough yet for a club to put a block on the barcodes being screenshotted (I've read it is done for gig tickets/other sports tickets).

Presume it will be the same this year. Me & my Dad always WhatsApp ours to each other to use when we can't make games.

That hockey atmosphere in GB v France in the mens hockey today was intense, glad we beat them and shut them up.

Great results in the rowing, and the women looked much better in the hockey than they have done previously.

Enjoyed watching the BMX tonight too, Beth Shriever smashed everybody, hopefully she can continue that form into the finals.

And unsurprised its Murray's time tonight in tennis, but what a career he's had and he's always been so proud to represent GB at the Olympics. Fantastic sportsman.

I had the mountain bike race on my second screen at work on silent as I was on a Teams call. Unbelievable fightback from Tom and that last lap was intense. Not surprised the French were upset! But as Mr Senna once said, the moment you don't go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver.

Or racing mountain biker in this case. Won it fair and square, fortune favours the brave.

As annoying as it was to lose yesterday I do remember a week before the 2010/11 season we relied on a last minute Jamie Mackie goal to scrabble a home draw out of League One Plymouth and everyone was grumbling before we then went on to have The Best Season Ever.

Not saying this year is likely to be a repeat (if only!) but something to bear in mind in not really being bothered by yesterday.

Looking at the Reddit Championship forum fans from every club are bemoaning the lack of a striker, the lack of depth, and in Oxford's case, the lack of kit announcement.

Even if we are out of the disastrous FFP cycle we still need someone to stump the cash up to fund the next lot of loss making ventures so its not straightforward.

Much like Northern's season previews, its all a bit pointless worrying until the end of August as everything will be done late on by everyone.

We tried on the womens side with England the designated nation to qualify as GB but we missed out to the Dutch in the Nations League.

Read it but that book's nearly 25 years old now! "Not bang up to date" is putting it mildly!

It makes me feel old too

Bradford Park Avenue fascinate me for some reason. I think its a mix of the name, the fact their original stadium looks proper evocative in pictures, joined onto the cricket ground like Headingley, and them being historically the bigger club in Bradford (I think) before Bradford City outgrew them whilst they shrank away.

It seems in America that as soon as they have one election they immediately start obsessing over the mid-terms, then as soon as the mid-terms are done they start obsessing over the next election.

Lord knows how they find time to actually do anything else.

Trouble is a brewing...even our own Football League is getting in on the act according to this. They could perhaps reduce player fatigue by getting rid of the ridiculous group stage of the EFL Trophy to start with.

I'd actually be in favour of scrapping the EFL Trophy and making the League Cup Championship to League Two teams only myself. Probably an argument for another day though.

Well Parliament existed before then but a King getting his head chopped off had already been mentioned so I ignored that.

To flip it on its head, how would we feel if we'd spent £1m on a 20 year old with 4 goals in 64 games for his club? Doesn't scream young gem at you.

We all got excited by him when he burst onto the pitch as a sub with pace and power, but not much else, because the team he was playing in was so bad just someone running around a bit made it look so much better.

I don't think I've ever seen anything in him though to make me think he'd be a force at this level and the club have done well to do what they've done.

Whether Celar proves to be better is to be seen, but he's got a bit of pedigree at least.

Rather famously of course we tried to blow a monarch up and now celebrate it every year in November...

I was curious as I was sure both Queen Vic and Elizabeth had attempts on their lives by firearms.

Bit of info on this clickbait style site about 6 Royal Family members who have had attempts on their life, Lizzie II survived three apparently.

Google searching "assassination attempts on British monarchs" has now probably got my computer flagged for surveillance...

I always felt, and still do, that Seb Polter was better than people gave him credit for. And Sylla had a fairly decent goals:minutes played ratio. Their biggest problems was our radical swerve in manager types in their time at the club.

Matt Smith as well in fairness I thought was better than given credit for.

And Shankland is an interesting one - we didn't go for him for whatever reason but nor has anyone else in England, and perhaps tellingly, the Old Firm haven't either. And when it comes to Scotland Dykes gets picked ahead of him. So he might be one who's a good goalscorer at his level, but actually people higher up the game think he can't cut it on all round play. And we've seen before quite a few times now how big goalscorers at lower levels can't replicate that in the Championship - Will Grigg on fire anyone?
