Charlie Austin on QPR a few days ago
at 10:33 29 Jul 2024

Les stayed at least one, arguably two seasons longer than he needed to (and than his modern equivalent would).

Never, ever agitated to leave in public (unlike many others - including popular players like Sinton & Fenwick).

That'll do me.

And for all the mixed results of his DoF tenure, he clearly came back to do that role because of his feelings for the club. He wouldn't have rocked up to do that job at, say, Watford or Charlton.

BIden v Trump - and we thought our options were poor !!
at 08:40 28 Jul 2024

I'm feeling wide awake, thanks, and am happy to keep on despising Trump.

My decision is based not on what "people are trying to tell me", but 100% on everything I hear coming out of his mouth - always punching down, always aggressive, frequently narcissistic; never any lightness of touch, humour, warmth or compassion.

Maybe try putting a more reasoned argument as to why you think Biden / Harris vs Trump is a more nuanced choice than many of us think, like Clareman and Hubble have done, and both of which I read with genuine interest and an open mind.

WTF is a head of methodology?
at 13:01 22 Jul 2024

It's a bit of protection / security for when, eg the first team manager gets sacked, the u16s coach gets poached etc etc - we have a club-wide playing model (an idea Wenger first brought to the English game), and employ new people who fit the model.

Most clubs have quite high turnover with academy coaches (many roles part time / not brilliantly paid), so makes staff changes there less of an issue for players too.

Armstrong
at 15:27 19 Jul 2024

Have I missed something with Dunne?

As far as I could see, it was very different to the Armstrong situation...most notably, love-in quotes from both sides when the renewal was triggered, whereas Armstrong trigger saw no response from him and a formal one liner from the club.

We all know Dunne may not suit Marti-ball in his post-pragmatism / 'my own squad' second season. But Jimmy wants a shot at still getting in the team cos he's happy at the club and arguably has proved doubters wrong once already; while Marti thinks he's good to have around the place so is happy to keep him on board for now. So the triggered extension suits both parties.

That's how I read it.

Did Southgate's tactics cost England?
at 10:24 15 Jul 2024

I've generally been a massive Southgate fan - but this tournament he simply got too much wrong.

Making big calls on leaving out trusted old favourites but then not seeming to have trust in those he brought in instead (see Rashford left out but Gordon gets 5 minutes)...not knowing his best team or formation and trying to adapt somewhat hamfistedly on the job...and above all, his caution - I could see why to some extent in previous tournaments he didn't "take the handbrake off", but with this squad, in a tournament not exactly packed with stand out teams, it was screaming out to be done, and he couldn't bring himself to do it.

Plus points - even more young players have shown they're comfortable at this level - Guehi, Mainoo, Palmer. There's a great squad there if the FA makes the right call on manager.

Spear of Destiny..

Was tempted by this as loved both bands back in the day...but as a rule, I prefer my memories of bands in their prime to going to see them as 60 somethings with half at most of the original line up.

The Skids without SA ain't the Skids really, is it?

I have friends who religiously go to see SoD on every tour, but thus far I've resisted the temptation to join them.

I hope this is and stays just a rumour.

Blimey, imagine the frenzy on Sky when Frank Lampard's Sunderland play Wayne Rooney's Plymouth.

I could see why Marti might be tempted by Burnley. Sunderland? For all they're a bigger club than either us or Burnley, I'm not sure it's a good career move for him now.

Armstrong extended
at 12:51 14 Jun 2024

Interesting debate...with almost everyone, pro- and anti-, adding caveats.

Problem is tho...it looks like his agent doesn't want him to sign a new deal even if the club wants him to.

Armstrong extended
at 08:33 13 Jun 2024

I'm generally in the 'bags of potential' / 'he's only 20 ffs' / 'adds a different dimension to the team' / 'would love to see him make it with us' camp.

But we all know we've got to move on from being held to ransom by tw@t agents.

For all his many ups & downs, Willock's agent is in a position to put together a damn impressive showreel that could make clubs with a few more quid than us take a punt. I'd love to see how Armstrong's agent is pitching his client to any club that has more money / higher aspirations than us...

I don't normally read too much into these things, but when Dunne's contract extension was triggered, Jimmy was quoted as follows:

“I am really happy to be staying at QPR,”...subtext, I like it here, I've not done enough to get a move to a bigger / richer club, me & my agent reckon take the extension, try to build on the second half of last season, then either earn a better contract at QPR or be able to move on a free next year.

The contrast to no quote at all from Armstrong is quite stark.

Eze for England!

With you 100% PS.

He's also created a spirit in the squad we haven't had in years, players want to be called up, they all enjoy it when they get there, and club rivalries are put to one side.

Confession time - Play off winners
at 11:42 28 May 2024

The season as a whole was a slog. I get where Ted's coming from - if players put a shift in, all good, and to be fair a good chunk of that squad did, even if we knew many were here only for the money or due to Redknapp being allowed to stockpile. But blimey we made hard work of it, some of the awaydays were painful.

As Dave says, the final itself was a real bucket list day which I'll never forget. The bizarre offshoot for me living in Nottingham is to this day all my Forest mates celebrate 'Zamora day' as much as, maybe more than, we do.

The reason I can't share in the anniversary nostalgia fest is I remain angry and bitter about what happened next. We'd cocked up our first period back in the top flight for aeons - by gambling with all the FFP etc rules, we squeaked a second opportunity at what could and should have been a transformative season for the club in a positive way. And within weeks completely screwed it up and left the club in a mess we're still inching our way out of.

Southgate’s replacement.

I disagree re Maddison being one of his boys. He resisted the call to pick him and / or give him meaningful game time for aeons when he was in imperious form or Leicester.

Only ever really been a cameo sub. I think that's Eze's best chance.

Eze Rumours

If it was us in Palace's position - would you be saying "hold on to them all, this is our golden chance to push on", "cash in our chips, a must do to survive - just reinvest wisely", or "sell 1, maybe 2 of the crown jewels but don't rip the team to pieces"?
