Southgate in terms of his decision making probably had his first decent game of the tournament last night as at least made some fairly bold calls (for him), being:

1) Stayed with the back 3 against better opposition as thought he'd revert to a safe back 4

2) Brought on Shaw @ H/T to try to win the game early

3) Subbed Foden and gave Palmer enough time to change the game as he does

4) Brought Watkins on to give Palmer a runner to hit, a joined up substitution

5) After Watkins goal had quick thinking to get Konsa on to defend the inevitable long ball into the box, with Gallagher to harry in Midfield

On top of these better decisions, the team seemed to pass the ball quicker and at real pace compared to in previous games.

I think with the players at his disposal and the runs he's had in recent tournaments he's a fairly lucky Manager, but like his team, he does seem to be getting the hang of what he needs to do at exactly the right time.

That's a good point as it was VAR that gave the penalty and not the Referee.

Hit the bar from one, arguably should have been given a penalty at another, they had some serious height and aerial power on the pitch in the 2nd Half, only let down by poor set-piece delivery,

Kane got his shot off then clashed feet on follow through, that is just never a penalty, but it was given and that's all that counts.

The corner was a big call as Holland were so dominant in the air it was there Plan A goal threat in the 2nd Half,

The free kick at the start of the goal scoring move was never a free kick as was seen by the spontaneous reaction of 5 Dutch players who went ape,

How did that Referee with his previous get that game,

All fine margins but ultimately a superb pass by Cole and turn + shot by Watkins was a worthy match winning moment.

Agree, he's a top bloke, and seems to be getting braver in his decisions with those substitutions last night, the Shaw change after a dominant 1st Half was a big call but could see for all the possession needed to create more chances, likewise taking off Fiden who was playing well but needed Palmer to open up the Holland defence

Needs that same confident aggressive approach against the Spanish imo.

I like Southgate as a bloke but just don't rate him as a Manager,

Is a system effective when you barely muster a shot on target in 90 minutes against average opposition as in 2 of the games?

As Roy Keane says it doesn't matter if you get the win but some of the nonsense spouted about Southgste is unreal,

My favourite after the shoot out win was it was all down to Southgate taking the penalty takers in groups of 3 and overseeing their prep,

Yep Ivan Toney, Cole Palmer & Trent listening to Southgate on how to take a penalty and it being the difference.

Is there a saying better to be lucky than good?

Criticism of Southgate was totally merited thus far and the players and weak opposition have got him out of jail before last night,

Different team 1st Half last night but Koemam changed it at Half Time and dominated 2nd Half until Palmer came on and does what he does, looking for those incisive forward passes,

3 big wrong decisions changed the game which is why it seems Southgate is riding his luck all the way in this tournament.

I really don't get this one at all,

Lad comes from a good family, was at City's Academy for maybe 5 years so must have some discipline, Brighton saw enough in him to spend decent money on him (and they'e no mugs) and fairly sure he played a season in League 1 for Doncaster Rovers with presumably positive reports?

Only explanation is he's back knocking around with childhood pals and at 22 (?) is reliving the youth he missed out on having relocated to Manchester from age of 14 to 19.

I still hav'nt completely given up he will come to his senses but maybe the £5m odd he's probably already banked in his career will extinguish any desire he once had of playing professional football.

I get that, and arguably Capello in particular and Hodgson had decent CV's, but Southgate has done nothing in management to justify that wage,

How the FA justify this with price of tickets for Wembley internationals etc is beyond me, but as you say, sanity does'nt come into it.

Agree thought Eze played well but was wrong side of his man for that gilt-edged chance which was a really poor miss.

If you're not up to the task, taking £5m quid is criminal, especially when you look at his CV, he's no Carlo Ancelotti and would be unlikely to be offered a job by the Top 20 teams in the country, so who agreed £5m was reflective of his value in the market?

I would have thought the influx of money & foreign coaches & players is the reason why the technical levels of our players has improved, but we are still below other European nations, as seen last night with a team who have barely a left foot between them.

Lack of changes made no sense at all and he got away with it as you say,

One of many examples of his ineptness was moving Eze into LWB position when I think he still had 2 if not 3 Subs available (including Konsa) during that 1st Half in Extra-Time,

Ian Wright picked up on this weakness and I'm a big Eze fan but know he just cannot concentrate & defend that space and nearly got caught out twice, particularly when his man put it over the bar from 6 yards or so, then its penalties and its not looking so good,

Just another example of Southgate being caught in the headlights & just look at the pedigree of his coaching team, those boys are stealing a living,

Alright being Mr Do The Right Thing but actions speak louder than words and how Southgate can accept a salary of £ 4.9m beggars belief (and I like the bloke).

An already wealthy man from football and somehow thinks he's worth 10 times the salary of Sabrina Weigman or 20 times the salary of the PM? Just reminds me of a Trevor Brooking FA type who ticks all the boxes except one, being able to do the job.

Those may be fair observations but he was the only player in that 2nd Half who stood up, others (including Bellingham) just disappeared and hid,

Nearly got the equaliser through showing desire and this desire and belief has been on show all season with Arsenal,

In a team lacking characters he's a must start.

Slaughtering the Manager, no shot on target for 90 minutes and he made 1 forced substitution on 65mins and a tactical substitution on 86mins, blokes on £5m quid a year and he's clueless.

Decent if basic headed assist but I thought looked a level below any other player technique wise and made zero effort out of possession compared to other Subs like Gallagher,

Given the team has no structure or tactics and resorted to aimless crosses, if they don't up their game soon he'll likely be their best option, which is a damning indictment of Southgate and his laughably inept backroom team.

I actually thought in the 25 minutes he was on Eze showed 2 or 3 moments of real progressive play which I hadn't seen in first 45mins, a little unfortunate the excellent dribble towards the end didn't open up a shot on goal.

From what I saw you see why Steve Clarke said he'd be a big miss, just couldn't get out of their own half and get any possession in the final third.

I have you right there Anti,

If Cifuentes had read this forum everything could have worked out better sooner and we would'nt have been relying on those last two games,

One average fan advised him having seen a lot of these players (not as much as some mind) that:

1) We did'nt have the midfielders to play 4-3-3 & needed to change to a 4-2-3-1 (he eventually did)

2) We were playing with 10 men with Dozzell, he needed to drop him (he did asap)

3) We needed a strong spine & to get Dunne, Field & Dykes back in Starting XI (he did, after the Stoke non-performance)

4) We needed to start Dykes in the run-in as Armstrong & Frey were'nt starters (he eventually did, whether by fortune or judgment)

You don't need too many coaching badges to have worked out the above mind

Played a full season for Doncaster Rovers in League 1 so had desire at some point,

Relocated from Shepherds Bush to Manchester (City) for his teenage years so has some fibre,

Just think coming back to Shepherds Bush with a lot of money and hooking up with Central Cee and your old mates is just too big a distraction and really something the Recruitment Dept is'nt going to factor into their spreadsheets.

Attributes wise....

Positives - he has strength, pace and desire.

Negatives - he has poor control, poor technical ability (ie does'nt have a trick to beat a player), is very one-footed, not a threat in the air but most worryingly for me he has that lack of flexibility in his hips which results in a heavy touch all too often.

I like the lad but reckon the R Block and Twitter see something I'm missing.
