It was announced on the night as being a record attendance FOR A RUGBY MATCH at Spotland and they were quite specific about that when they announced it.
All AVAILABLE tickets were sold, thus it was a sell out. There would have been a couple of hundred spaces occupied by the technical crew in the corner of the Sandy Lane stand and elsewhere, there were many 'guests, cheer-leaders, choirs, entertainers' who were accommodated, so their seats would not have been 'for sale'. I don't know whether the front rows were available in the TDS as opposed to being covered with the black advertisement cloth.
(I've never seen as many people engaged in 'off-field' activities. Seeing TV camera men enter the pitch during play was a bit of an eye-opener as well.)
There was probably a reduction in total capacity because it was a 'night match' as seems to be customary for Rugby games, so even at 8872 it was a great effort.
A final word for the stewards. They were helpful, pleasant, good-humoured and joined in the entertainment. Whether these particular stewards are normally at Spotland I don't know because I haven't been in the Willbutts Stand for a match before, but they were everything you'd hope they would be. |  |

What was the crowd when Hornets played Oldham when both clubs were doing really well around 1989/1990ish? Might have been on Boxing Day.
No matter, I'm currently reading Football Grounds of Britain by Simon Inglis. On the Rochdale section there's a bit about Dale's manager in 1954, Harry Catterick, bemoaning only 7000 turning up for the first game under floodlights. It goes on to say "Catterick must have been even more miffed when 10,682 turned up at Spotland seven weeks later for a one-off floodlit Rugby League game, Hornets v Keighley."
Having read the BBC link, that's just typical for them. Dale have had bigger crowds in recent years and the main thing is it was an excellent crowd last night. No need to mention records. [Post edited 29 Oct 2013 10:26]

As the 'new' stadium we had 9870 for the Darlington play off game. As a stadium record I think its 24231 v Notts Co in an FA Cup tie in 1949/50. |  |

7048 for the FCUTD match seemed a bit underestimated, it felt pretty jam packed that night - never seen the away end so full, and noisy! | |

Serious question, if the Spotland capacity is over 10,000 and they were turning people away at the ticket office surely the attendance should've been nearer to 10,000 than 8872? I know the screen would've reduced the capacity and the cameras take up a few seats but losing over 1100 possible attendees seems a lot? Great crowd all the same - just confusing with talk of a sell out. |

Great night at Spotland and hats off to Rochdale Hornets. I was one of the sceptics who thought they were over estimating interest so fair play to them. And well done to all the staff at Spotland, whilst it was inevitably busy in the bar and kiosks, they seemed prepared enough.
I'm not a keen follower of rugby league but I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Some of Fiji's players were absolute man mountains and they certainly threw their weight about!
To add to the attendance debate, we were in Row B of the TDS, and noticed all of Row A's chairs has had the seat part removed so obviously they weren't in use. I presume they have been took out over the years to replace broken ones in other parts of the stand. | | | |

I admit to being 80 years of age and this was my first visit to a live rugby league match.
It was a great honour for the town to stage this match. The organisation was superb and well done to all concerned. Make no mistake that stadium was just about full and nearer 10000 than 8000. Many young people and children present. I was so happy that i went. It will long live in my memory as a fine sporting event.
As for a game of rugby, well it was BRUTAL!!!! Glad I never played it.
