Haven't lived in the Borough for years but, from the outside looking in, I really don't see how this serves the people of Rochdale. It's clear that Galloway's only here because of the large Muslim population. For his opening statement to be that 'this is for Gaza' is just plain weird and wrong. Surely it should be for the people of the town?
Galloway was always going to be favourite I suppose after Labour completely messed up. But Rochdale is a strange constituency and the circumstances were ideal for him. Despite all the tubthumping and media exposure though the turnout was 40% which is pretty low for a well publicised by-election. The electorate seemed indifferent. So Galloway received 40% of 40% if that makes sense. The mainstream parties came nowhere, rolling in behind a remarkable achievement by David Tully whilst Danzcuk was more or less humiliated. When it’s general election time another 30% on the those on the electoral register may well bother to turn out. The destination of their votes, plus the 6000 of Tully’s will decide who the next MP is after Galloway who has possibly won maxed out already on his potential support. Many years ago I did a student dissertation on Rochdale’s first Labour MP who won the seat in 1924, almost exactly a century ago. His name was William Kelly, and, as his name perhaps suggests, he was accused of hoovering up the “immigrant Irish vote” so some things don’t change in some ways!

Agree with your analysis - Reform's humiliation was a welcome surprise.
Another significant factor at the GE will be that, with the upcoming Constituency Boundary Changes, the Rochdale Constituency will lose Spotland & Falinge ward and thus a large part of the 'Muslim' vote.

And you can throw into that mix the boundary changes that have taken place. Danczuk was a dreadful choice by Reform as essentially he is yesterdays man and carries rather too much baggage. The boundary change has seriously affected the Tory vote and there was no appetite for the Liberals as a middle way. The calibre of the candidates, Tully excepted, was about as poor as it gets and sadly reflects politics in Rochdale generally when you look at the council. And besides, what have our MPs ever really done for the town? We keep sending them to Parliament but can anyone actually point to anything and honestly say "our MP did that for us"? They all simply become cannon fodder in the corridors of Westminster.
If I were Dave Tully this morning, I would be plotting to bring a new party into local politics and make a real difference to the town, party politics as we know them are now corrupted beyond redemption, its time for local people with a local agenda to take local control of local affairs and throw out the party-political drones we are currently infected with.

Allen Brett was on Radio 4 this morning talking about the election. He was positive about Dave Tully, less positive about other aspects.
I wonder if there is a possibility that Dave Tully could become Labour's General Election candidate for later in this year?
The local agenda needs a quality local voice but with mainstream support so that once in the HoC they don't become the fodder you describe.
The town needs that. I read a speech from Galloway in the press that noted with the lack of NHS provision its no longer possibly to be born or die in Rochdale; emotive rhetoric and he will be looking to exploit that in other similar parts of the UK which are warm to the message he brings.
George Bernard Shaw had it right:
"He who can does; he who cannot, teaches."

I'm not sure that Allen carries a lot of clout these days but it's an interesting notion. There again, Labour this time round selected Ali instead of Paul Waugh. I wonder what the latter thinks about that now?
I live close to Rochdale. It would have been easier to go to Oldham, but to be honest I have never really enjoyed the atmosphere there.
I looked at all the matches I could go to, I even considered going to Wrexham vs York but chose Chesterfield as I have always enjoyed visiting there. It is easy to park, the stadium is well designed, and you get a good view of the match.
I had watched Chesterfield on TV in the Ratcliffe the week before, prior to the Dale game against Swindon and noticed that they had a striker named Quigley and that Harry Maguire’s brother also played for them.
I then read about Chesterfield and how they are a “fan owned” club but on a different model to ours so I was intrigued and wanted to see first-hand how they were doing.
Chesterfield had consecutive relegations from league 1 and league 2 and narrowly avoided a third consecutive relegation from the national league.
Then in 2020 their community trust charity (their equivalent Rochdale AFC Community Trust) with council help purchased the club to be “fan owned” and run on a breakeven basis.
They even, like the Dale, sell shares in the club to fans but are more realistic and honest about their worth.
Hi kel, it could have been a different Rochdale, maybe down south somewhere...
That’s quite possible I suppose but I’ve been scratching my head on this one.
I read a lot of football forums and it’s very rare to see someone say “Hi/Good Morning <insert poster name> when replying to a poster. To have two people on the same site do it is very, very rare. Both the posters I’m thinking of like typing out very detailed replies, have a very similar posting style and seem to have a decent knowledge of clubs at this level. If you look at the thread in my post, A_Newby mentions crowds and the closing of stands like another poster on here recently did and has in the past.
What was odd though was that two posters who’ve never had avatars on here before both uploaded one on the very same day. I don’t tend to believe in coincidences and I’m not known as ‘Kelumbo’ in some circles for nothing.

If GG is right and its impossible to die in Rochdale I am moving back.
