I once heard from a very good source (Overcoat Man - I was in the company but not the conversation) that a Chinese Zillionaire had shown interests in buying the Club, what was said with reference to Mr Dunphy during his chairmanship and I quote "Dunphy's ego got the better of him and he blocked it" might this go at lest some way to answering your question !

To be serious Dunphy could not block anything like this by himself. He was part of a BoD.
