Sheffield United Reflection
at 22:53 2 Mar 2025

I can't comment on Morrison's fitness, but to me, Cook is still a long way from the player he was pre-injury. For me, he was our star man in the opening period of the season when everyone else (except Nardi) was basically shite. We didn't garner many points, but Cook contributed to the most of them. Burnley was the stand-out, but he was excellent /very good in every game. He is not near that level since his return.
That said, I wouldn't be inclined to bin him off this season, just because his form has dipped/ his age. We have had some stalwart CB's well into their 30's -Hill, Dunne/Neilson all spring to mind in the last decade or so and we can go right back to Frank McLintock in my time. I would give him another year, if nothing else to school Morrison during training and because he is 'the right sort' around the dressing room.
However, IF Morrison, is fully fit, I would certainly be giving him more time over the remaining games. As for Edwards (who was Beckenbaur's bastard son a couple of weeks ago), as long as we are paying him, keep playing him

Time to play our own
at 22:37 2 Mar 2025

Cheers Kensa. Obviously I knew it would not be anything like Prem money, but did think it would be higher than that. Below tenth it becomes quite miniscule, but I guess we should still aspire to that.

Is it not a thing that for each place we finish in the league we receive x amount of money? So the higher we finish the more money we make? So we play our strongest team to try to achieve our highest possible position. Irrelevant if the player is contracted for the next four years or three months.

Only because Hitler breached the non-aggression pact. Part of which saw them intending to secretly carve up Poland between them. Let's at least be factually correct here.

And breathe... - Simon Dorset's annual deep dive into the accounts
at 12:52 27 Feb 2025

It's remarkable. I consider myself 'reasonably' intelligent, with a fairly decent education, but I can not make one jot of sense of this. Utterly utterly useless when it comes to figures. Am I right in saying we have just squeezed in under the permitted 39M deficit over the rolling 3 year period?

Transfer policy massively attack orientated at expense of defensive cover !!

True enough, although there is Morrison. Also in the last window we brought in the Aberdeen lad and the lad from Chelsea who can (apparently) literally play anywhere when he is fit.
I agree there is also much more uncertainty about our defence, with Dunne/Paal/Cook out of contract and Edwards/Ashby on loan. Definitely should be our area of focus for the summer - plus the 20 goal striker of course.

We have had a lot of weak players, or worse still, good players who 'phoned it in' (LFW Glossary). But there is only one player who was a wa*ker before he joined us, a wa*ker while he was here and a wa*ker since he left (right up to the current time) and that is Barton.

Paal/clueless Rs players post-match
at 14:33 24 Feb 2025

I don't know how reliable the source was (can't even remember what the source was tbh), but was it not a thing last summer that Paal was going to Watford and we were bringing in an Italian guy to replace him. Then the Italian guy went to Watford instead and we tried to bring Beck in from Liverpool - but he went to Blackburn instead, so we were 'stuck' with Paal.
As I say, dunno how much truth in all of that, but if the club tired to move him on before the season started, then I must say I think his conduct has been exemplary all season. He may have made mistakes (and they certainly get highlighted when he does), but he has always been 100% professional in the manner he conducts himself. Personally, I would have no issues if he signed a new contract.

Super goal but culpable for both of theirs albeit indirectly. As you say slipped at just the wrong moment when he was about to make a challenge and no denying the quality of the finish.
While the 2nd began with a Cook error, Dunne got burned by Murphy before the cross. Love Dunne but he is exonerated from blame virtually all the time, while Paal gets blamed for everything. Nobody praised him for his block for a certain goal v Derby when the game was still very much in the balance.

Marti interview in The Independent
at 00:27 22 Feb 2025

There is a huge amount of concern about Marti being 'poached' from us in the near future. While I understand the angst over the first decent manager we have had since Warburton, I feel the advice that Clive gave in this (yesterday) evening's Portsmouth preview regarding current results/performances is equally pertinent here. We simply need to enjoy the NOW that Marti is providing us with and not worry too much about the future.
We can't on the one hand, not want to be successful, while on the other, hope that that nobody notices the work our manager does in making us (more) successful. There is no point in stressing about him leaving. At some point he will, either by his own volition or by the club's.
As mentioned on a different thread, I having being following this nutty little club for nigh on 50 years (a mere pup compared to PinnerR) and have seen a hell of a lot of managers come and go in that time. The greats stand out in the memory, Sexton, Venables, Francis, Warnock. The dross also for the opposite reason (Take a bow, Mr. Hughes) -while the mediocre (the vast majority) have slipped my mind . My point is, sooner or later, Marti will depart and be replaced and on and on it will go. In the meantime...breathe... and enjoy.

Congrats Pinner. I'll have 50 clocked up in August - still a bit of a novice by your standards. Hayden will be a huge benefit to them as we know well - Dozzell not so much. As always, it will depend on whether we are 'at it' or not, would like to see Dembele get some minutes. Could be entertaining - going for 2-2 - hoping Chair might be in the groove now and bag a few over the coming weeks.

Celar?
at 20:50 17 Feb 2025

Obviously he offers a completely different option than Frey. Frey's hold up plat and physicality are exemplary, but sometimes quite predictable to play against. We saw at Hull how Lloyd changed the game. If we had a third option that OUR players could adapt to mid-game, it could unlock some tight defences. I also think Celar could also do well with Morgan and Edwards who both like to play passes through the centre, and Celar likes to run in behind.
