Correct, which is why JM has to put a team out on Saturday that believes in itself They've every reason to, but then they had after the convincing Yeovil victory which sadly led to a series of non-performances, starting with the home loss to Oldham For that reason alone, Saturday will be approached more in hope than expectation |

Could be that Gilmour's game has taken an upturn with a more forward-facing approach by the manager - and better forwards |

Having now clawed our way back into the playoffs with games in hand, a single-goal defeat where we'd played with the kind of confidence we're seeing now would be far from unacceptable - i very much doubt we'll remain unbeaten for the rest of the campaign What would be retrograde would be to allow their gameplan to dominate us. It's not as if the points you make about our respective styles and abilities isn't known - what i'm looking for is that step-change in JM's abilities which would mean we'll be contenders for the very top next year if we don't quite make it this time round |

A borefest would be a significant improvement on what we saw in the home fixture against Oldham, who might have won by a bigger margin Not giving way at this stage of the season is acceptable, even if they managed to sneak it [Post edited 12 Mar 10:57]

The critical difference is the ball sticking up front (Bird) and more judicious use of the long ball from the back to stretch the opposition defence |

And with that in mind, critical game on Saturday The performance will matter as much as the result |

Yes, refreshingly honest and forthright - possibly not to everyone's taste but let's face it, his way of doing things has made him an absolute fortune He and Sir Peter Ogden are friends, and i expect that behind the scenes, Sir Peter is taking a great deal of interest in how he's going about seeking to rejuvenate one of the biggest clubs in the world. Whilst we're at the other end of the professional scale, there are lessons there The biggest factor that comes across is his ability to admit mistakes - and move on. He'll have a lifetime of doing that in his business empire, and whilst he's on a learning curve in the football world, he'll know what he's taken on and keep going until he gets it right |

FA Trophy Final: 11 May National League playoff final: 1 June We can dream... |

Oddly enough, i was wondering yesterday how many teams Hendo had scored against... But you had the stat on number of keepers too! |

Having a fit and fresh Hendo to deploy during the remaining games could be huge If that was the plan all along, to save his 40yo legs for the "business end" (perhaps in collaboration with him) then it could - if we reach Wembley and the playoffs - go down as a masterstroke It would otherwise be seen as a waste, but i'm feeling positive that JM may have stumbled on a consistent formula to win games, at long last |

...but that'll do to be going on with! |

I remain far from convinced [Post edited 8 Mar 14:25]

Yep, what's known as "the business end of the season" We need to be feeling positive at 5pm this evening |

I was that devil! What i'm referring to is the kind of consistent back-to-back and continuing levels of performance, which the Yeovil game wasn't followed up with. All teams have postponements, and some are more last-minute and deflating than others, but if we can add to the two previous results today then it'll be the first sign of significant progress - not just one good performance [Post edited 8 Mar 13:44]

It may well be a psychological defence mechanism on James' part If you're spending a huge amount of time, effort and cash travelling up from Sussex, you'd want to think you were investing that in someone who can manage a team that's moving forwards, at least Since the turn of the year, as you say, we've been moving backwards until last week. Like every other Daley, i hope that signals a return to some kind of challenge for the playoffs The amount of aforesaid time, effort and cash applies to plenty of others, of course, and others still who live locally but have a spent a lifetime supporting Dale |

Absolutely essential, therefore, that we did too Well done Dale! |

We need to get TAR delivering those crosses into him again, just like Trent Alexandria-Arnold |
 | Forum Reply | Altrincham FA Trophy Match Thread at 17:05 3 Mar 2025
We also had KH as manager, who -whilst perhaps no longer at his best - had enough in his armoury to enforce a draw with Spurs and utilise his squad so they were running through brick walls over that period The comparison i'd be inclined to make is obvious |
