Long before my time so I wouldn't know, but I have to salute you for standing up for your old mate's old man. |

OK, some fair points here. I suppose what I mean by "unwilling to do what it takes" isn't so much about charging around at high temp, it's more about mailing himself a key part of the team - which in his case would be about pulling the strings, pinging the ball out to willing runners like Smyth or Saito. That's what I'm not seeing and hoped for. QPROslo may be onto something with the idea that trying to contribute more defensively has been detrimental (though if so that makes him a luxury this team probably can't afford.) Certainly there were some signs early on that he had something to offer, which have largely disappeared. |

Less than a month ago people were slagging off the manager for picking Edwards in the FA Cup and using his selection as evidence that we were playing a weakened team. |

Yeah, it might not be fair to say that Frey "woke up to" the need to run, I'm not sure he was fit enough to do that when he joined, but he's made bloody sure that he can and does. I just don't get why Madsen has seemed so unwilling to do what it takes. He's really blown a chance here, because if you look at where we are despite our appalling start to the season you can see that thee's plenty of potential here but he's p*ssed away the chance to be the main man in this side. (Pretty sure Varane is going to get lots more game time, btw. Very willing player and usually good value for his place when he plays.) |

For the full-on Rangers experience he'd be out for the rest of the season but we'd have got him on loan. |

This isn't a totally stupid POV, but the real issue is poor contract management. If we sell Dunne now we may be getting the best price for him that we can expect, but it's still going to be low relative to his worth to the club. I don't think we're looking at a sale now that will fund "multiple" players next year, I think we're looking at roughly the price of one Madsen. (OK I know Madsen has been exceptionally poor value, but my point is that when 2-3m counts as a big outlay, you are always going to be taking a risk. It's either one Madsen or 2-3 Saitos and Hevertons, either way you aren't going to be rebuilding a team on that even if the deals are on balance decent; you need things like Morgan, where a guy you signed for peanuts turns out to be a mainstay of the team.) We ought to have had Dunne under a serious length of contract, so that we can play hardball when it comes to sale negotiations. TBF to the club, it really would have needed them to get the contract sorted relatively soon after his move to RB, when his true value to us became apparent. |

Slightly off the point, but it struck me today that Dunne is sort-of the reverse Paul Parker. Parker was known as a right-back at Fulham, then Jim Smith (or more likely Peter Shrives IMO) hit on playing him in central defence. In an era when the big target man striker was king and centre halves were all massive you could see the puzzlement in opposing teams when, e.g, Kevin Sharpe won nothing in the air as little Parker soared above them. Dunne looks exactly like a centre half of that era and has had his moments in that position but has really hit form as a right back. My point is that Parker's centre half form at QPR got him into the England side and a big money move to Man Utd, and in both cases they played him at right back, where he was decent and never looked out of place in those teams, but frankly he was never as dominant as he was when he payed for us. I'm willing to bet that if Dunne goes to Sheff Utd they play him in central defence and he'll be OK but never the cult hero he is for us as the Irish Cafu. |

Got to agree with this. Most of us meet and talk to God knows how many people every day. How often do you see a fight or a shouting match break out in normal life, outside of someone being boozed up or just off their head? Hardly ever. In certain places, though, apparently it's OK*. For some reason, football grounds have been like that since forever, and social media/online is another. On the road quite often another. There are people on here who have posted gazillions of times without ever starting an argument with anyone, people that I for one will read as soon as I see the avatar. There are others who start a ruck regularly. I bet in a secret ballot 90% of us would put the same names in each category. * It f ucking isn't. |

I'm sure you're right on that, I was certainly at the game with the marching band. Evening game, I can't remember the opposition. It was pretty much spontaneous and certainly pre-dated the Peter Reid version. I always thought we missed a trick on that - it was a real morale raiser in what was a lousy season, and it had the classic "You'll never walk alone" trick of football anthems of not actually having anything to do with the club or football at all, so we didn't need to alter it - it was other clubs who needed to change it to make it relevant to them. Then next season, as soon as other clubs were singing it, we dropped it. Pigbag was definitely ours too, can't remember why. |

There's some sort of gag about it being cheaper to buy a new Taylor Richards than repair the one we own but I'm too fed up after losing to bloody Sheff Wednesday to bother working it out. |

This has me genuinely wondering whether scouts (including ours) try having a chat with fans in the pub as well as watching the players. I reckon you'd pick up a certain amount |
