Thanks Clive.

Missed this one, so great to get the report.

Thanks Clive great report as always.

Yeah agree we played well - Lots of commitment and endeavour and deserved a point. We all thought Varane played well and gave him MOTM in the car on the way home just ahead of Saito who as you say was excellent when he came on. If only that header was two foot lower he would have brought the house down.

Bad news on Field but I thought Colback did well and a big chance for him now to try and earn another year contract over the next eleven games.

Overall we left disappointed but not to downhearted.

We're actually only a decent striker away from being a top 6 team on our day....

Great report - spot on. There was always that feeling towards the end that we might get lucky and squeeze a late equaliser. 2-2 would have been a phenomenal result and we weren't that far away from getting it.

Was a lovely day out in the early Spring sunshine, everyone seemed in a happy mood on Saturday. It's great not to have to worry too much about the table. I'm confident we'll be playing in the Championship again next season and I'm happy with that.

Cheers Clive.

Was Steve Cook always lacking in pace as he was on Saturday, or has this been affected by his injury? The way he was outpaced early on brought back memories of Rob Dickie!

It was probably due to the ability of their forwards, but I felt that Cook & Edwards struggled to contain them throughout the game. I also thought that we (I can't believe I'm writing this) sorely missed Paul Smyth. We badly needed his industry & pace. Saito on the left with Chair in the middle is our best option of scoring goals & hopefully we will resort to this.

I brought my wife along to this one. On the walk to the boozer afterwards she said "I dunno why you're always moaning, they seemed much better than you're always telling me"

I’m also getting fed up with Varanes passing. I started shouting ‘forward’ when he gets the ball and does his little pirouette to pass back. This has now caught on a bit with the people around me who are now joining in every time he gets the ball. It’s not making any difference though as it’d be such an improvement in his and the team’s game if he could play the ball forward

Thanks Clive enjoyed the report and the match despite losing. Be interesting to see how we do rest of the season..another 16th beckons? But going forward not sure how we get the quality to challenge for top 6th and compete with clubs with parachute payments…Think we have done ok with our budget but can’t see anything than another 10 years in the championship.

You need a big sale/Eze sell on really.

There's still progress to be had - Blackburn are in the bloody play offs as it stands - but I think really I look at Coventry and Brentford before them who were able to scout and recruit Gyokeres/Hamer types, sell, reinvest in more players like them, and that's how you get moving beyond this middle group and into contention.

Bristol City closer to the 6 than they've been for a while despite selling best player last year - because that £20m enables you to buy better players, better squad depth, better attackers.

Well yeah I'm not too optimistic about next season unless something like an Eze sale happens (and even then, can we spend that money well? I'm not totally convinced).

In any case there'll be a certain amount of recruitment required, probably mostly for the backline, and we'll still need to be treading along the FFP tightrope.

Hmmmm....

Can't argue with that report. A lot of huffing and puffing but lacking quality in the crucial area of central midfield and striker. Probably the two most expensive areas to recruit.

Cheers Clive, well-balanced report. I also feel Nardi has been well found out now in terms of not being able to deal with any kind of cross. He is starting to cost us points now; Coventry and again on Sat Surely that is coachable? I know the old chestnut; if he was perfect he wouldn't be here, but that cross for the first goal was his all day long. He is an excellent stopper, but a lot of work needs to be done on crosses.

Maybe put Nardi on the naughty step and give Walsh another go??

Only giving the ref 4...?

Made me laugh out loud, that. Nice work! Shame about the result but a good showing from the team, especially in the second half.

Varane looks the next best option for that - clear MoM and the only player that looked at the same level of the best Sheff U lads.

I'd like him to turn out into play more too, but he did some of that and took the ball from Nardi even under heavy pressure, alongside his main job which is to break up play and recycle possession. I'm not sure why all other CM's seem to get more of a pass over Varane for being ineffective in transitions when he's still young / new to the league and has otherwise shown massive improvement relatively quickly.

Great report as always - thanks.
It was noticeable to me in the ground at the final whistle how relatively upbeat the mood seemed. Sure, we're all disappointed to lose at home, but compare that with the run at the start of the season and how the atmosphere was after that dreadful run of home results and it's like night and day.
Despite the result, an enjoyable afternoon at the football which, after all, is why we go

Great report, we are getting there but falling short in being able to take our chances. Really hoping we can turn Leeds over again in front of the Sky love in for them.

Dunne and Paal to blame as well, neither shouted KEEPERS it seems, not that they should have to in that situation.

Two defenders, a keeper and Brereton still managed to score, awful goal to concede. I think Clive let them off too easily in his report, lol.

Watching on QPR+ I did appreciate our good attacking play creating so many goal scoring chances, but by the time we were into the 2nd half I had the depressing feeling that we had failed to take so many we weren't going to score at all. I was uplifted briefly by Frey's pen but again we didnt really create that much after that and couln't convert what we did. SU looked so much more effective in both penalty areas, scored from their only 2 shots on target so I read, and for all our good football it barely looked like we could scrape a point which we didn't.

I thought it was just me.

As you say Varane's key job is breaking up play and recovering possession. Especially with no Field to help with this. Looking at stats this season Varane carries the ball forward more than e.g. Colback, who incidentally seemed to pass the ball backwards a lot too despite being in a more attacking role. Not sure why Varane gets the heat.

This and Simmo’s post are spot on for me . All opinions of course , but Varane seems to be being singled out for not turning and driving forward when I don’t think I’ve ever seen Field or Colback do it (ok maybe not ever but I don’t remember them doing it too often ).

One thing I will say is that Varane finds space better than the other 2 . Whenever Colback or Field come short to show for the ball it’s like they make sure they are marked tightly so the ball can only go straight back to where it came . Varane seems to come and want it more and the reason maybe he’s getting more flak is that he seems to be able to create a little bit more time and space for himself . I do agree of course that he needs to improve on that part of his game . If he does and he should , then we will have a very good player.
For him to be criticised by some on here that he doesn’t create anything when we have so many other players on the pitch who are supposed to do that instead of him is a bit laughable really .

The blame is fully on Nardi. He has to claim that rather innocuous floated delivery from Souza which landed in his 6 yard area. Similar goal concession against Sheffield Wednesday for their first against us in the defeat at home. Contrast that with Sheffield United's keeper, who it must be noted is of similar stature to Nardi, but was impeccable and came out to defuse similar deliveries from us on at least three occasions.

He also very adroitly kept out a dangerous Paal corner in the first-half, when under the kind of pressure that seems to disorientate our keeper.

Having the ability to judge when to come out to claim a cross is a basic goalkeeping requirement, regardless of country in which you may have played football previously. His counterpart on Saturday is only into his second season at this level, but possesses all the prerequisites that I expect in a goalkeeper playing at championship level. I would also say the same of Millwall's first-choice keeper too, signed from Lincoln. Not the 10th dan martial arts expert who played for them on Saturday.
