Frustrating, disappointing performance and game, where both sides have been pretty much as incoherent as each other. More like a League One game at times, or something on the school playground.
Frey has been terrible, giving away stupid fouls (and picking up a booking), getting caught offside again and again, and somehow contriving to sabotage one of our few promising attacks by a bone-headed decision to turn directly into traffic in their box and then concede a free kick. After his stupid card, evne though I think he's a bit of a manager's favourite, Marti needs to do as Marti does with other players and hook him at h/t.
He also seems to have forgotten that Chair is a playmaking no. 10 and not an auxiliary left-winger (as was clearly in evidence v Derby) doubling up with Saito. Even though our comms oddly didn't pick up on it, it was interesting to see Koki had switched wings toward the end of the half, as what we were doing wasn't working.
Varane has shown how it's unfortunate we have him and not Hayden in his position - giving it away in dangerous places and generally being his usual uncreative self.
Smyth has hardly been in the game, and it was also interesting to see Marti having one or two animated convos with him on the touchline. If they can't find a way between them to get him more on the ball (which is probably related to the bunching on the left-hand side and the lack of service to him from midfield), we need to see if Yang can do any better.
Very few positives for me, though Paal has had a decent game, Nardi has been sound, and Edwards generally composed as ever. Marti needs to earn his corn. We've got a strong-looking bench. I would be pulling Varane and bringing on Colback to give us more glue and nous, but I'd also like to see something of Dembele and giving him some minutes. |  |
