On the day the European Championships start in Germany with the hosts taking on Scotland tonight Swansea City enter into their biggest window for years. But why ?

Quite simply, the Swans have never had a decent window since relegation from the Premier League and potentially not for their last two seasons in the top flight. They overspent in the Premier League or tried to do it in the cheap when relegated. The Swans will always spend money because they have had some excellent players to sell on, of course not all is reinvested, and we have to accept that.

The players sought this time around are not massively encouraging with other clubs in line to steal Connor Barron away ( Glasgow Rangers in the box seats) and now interest in Macauley Langstaff from other Championship sides, the Swans find themselves in a war of attrition and finance. Much has been made of the Swans finances but the club do have money to invest in new players, they received a lump sum from Leeds earlier this month for Joel Piroe, a fair few pounds we can assure you. Couple that with a very decent sell on fee if Morgan Whittaker leaves Plymouth, plus what will be seen as a good year balancing the books regards profit and sustainability - and the club will be in a far healthier state than when the last figures were declared.

The Jamie Paterson (above) situation is something we feel we can report on now. He has been offered a new contract, the content of the money involved isn’t known but only for one year. At his age as did Kyle Naughton he would certainly get another year after a successful season in 24/25. However, Jamie has rejected that contract pending a better one being offered, or by any club elsewhere. He has been given to the end of the month or he will be released. This doesn’t really help the Swans, but fair play with their patience with Jamie. It’s not the first time he’s played up regards a contract, in fact the last contract he was offered came about only after he stopped playing for the club.

Remember Andy Robinson wanting time to see if Leeds got promoted before he signed a new Swans contract ? Huw Jenkins managed that very well as far as we are concerned. And the Swans should do the same now. Jamie Paterson is holding up the club with regards to replacing him and their future planning. The window is open now. If he doesn’t like his terms then release him. The situation with Przemysław Płacheta is different, a low return winger who was injured playing for the Swans. Despite the club releasing him in May, it now seems he is potentially available to Luke Williams. If that’s the case Placheta’s salary demands must more than half for him to get a contract. And then even though the Swans have had him at the club since the injury, and still do today you get the feeling he will sign something as head coach Luke Williams and the player have a good relationship we are told.

There will be a lot of rumour and speculation, and as they did with Ronald (we broke the basic news on him a few days before he was announced) there will be a surprise signing we are certain. Both Sporting Director Paul Watson and head of recruitment, Martin Hodge, an ex goalkeeper with 520 career appearances with amongst others Everton, Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday. Albeit now sixty five, his goalkeeping experience and contacts will surely be put to the test this summer. With goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson signing on at the club, extending his contract, there can be no excuse if a decent goalkeeper can’t be sourced. He is currently England’s goalkeeping coach at the Euros this year.

The other links to the Swans this month seem to come with other clubs interested, and we do know Swansea won’t be getting in to bidding wars, that’s not their choice this summer. There will be more loans, but the basic priorities need to be met. That’s a keeper, midfielder and striker. Then the club can potentially take a deep breath and hold their position on other players, loans or otherwise.
