Nathan Wood dilemma : Nothing to do with improvement it’s all about profit and sustainability
Thursday, 13th Jun 2024 14:37 by Keith Haynes

Nathan Wood is one player the Swans are keen to sort out this month, especially when it could assist the club with its yearly profit & sustainability (P&S) declarations. it’s nothing to do with improvement or moving players into or out of the squad, it’s about money. Plain and simple.

All yearly returns by football clubs which effect profit and sustainability are covered to the end of June each year. That is called the ‘accounting reference period’ and by the 30th of June the figures have to be in. In the Swans case that period runs out in just over two weeks. Last years P&S was the same date. Those are the figures we heard about recently with around a seventeen million deficit.

However, and it is worth noting that the following players will improve the next P&S figures, they fall within this years declarations, plus salary savings. We haven’t included the money the Swans spent after June 30th on players but it sits around £5,000,000.

So, as we can see there is a pretty sum to be added to the P&S declarations this June. A profit of nearly €17,000,000 minus outgoings, that’s the five million or so referenced above. If the Swans could add Nathan Wood for the same reasons before the end of the month they would increase their profit by whatever they make on his sale. It isn’t essential, but the next P&S declarations for this time around (revealed next year) could look by far and away more promising. And the Swans really do need to show some form of good news after a year of Chairman, Andrew Coleman at the helm. Having joined the club officially last May he wiped his hands of the period May to August 2023 and all of a sudden started saying he became Chairman on August 1st 2023. Simply not true, he presided over everything between May and August. Like most things the clubs ownership gets away with these type of ‘issues’ as they do with most matters. The P&S rules clearly being used by Coleman so he wasn’t a part of the seventeen million deficit. But of course by stating he started on August 1st he gets the credit for this time around. Well, he didn’t get that one by us, and now it’s clear to see. Get up a bit earlier in the day Mr Coleman.

There is a benefit in to increasing a players leaving date as well as hurrying up the process as we have explained. And it’s fairly easy to see, sell your player before June 30th and he adds to your profit for that twelve month period. Sell afterwards and he adds to the next twelve month period. A situation which could actually save a club like Swansea City who are very close to the P&S ceiling. A five million pounds figure for Nathan Wood would be most welcome, but before June 30th of course.

We will also add that Luke Williams and the whole of the Swans hierarchy have our full support this summer and for the coming season.
