Twenty million pound plus bid incoming ? Spurs defender of interest Thursday, 24th Aug 2023 11:12 by @Cornish67David The speculation is rife, and the ongoing rumour mill hit another level this morning with Southampton mentioned as about to ‘swoop’ for two very key Swansea City players. It can become boring, but the duty of any website of this nature is to report the latest news, especially if it is relevant to information already reported this week. By all accounts, but it is news to any source we have at this moment in time Southampton are planning a ‘double’ swoop for Joel Piroe and Nathan Wood. We’ve asked the question, but there’s nothing to back this up at least within the club itself. That of course doesn’t mean to say that Southampton haven’t again circumnavigated the Swans hierarchy in Wales to make their interest known. We do know they did so earlier this week when it came to Nathan Wood and his latest position at the club. Sporting Director Paul Watson is fully aware of that tactic employed earlier on this week, which in the context of the current situation at Swansea was a ‘below the belt’ move. The reasoning will no doubt surface in time as we have already reported this week. However, having discussed the possibility of both players leaving Swansea that isn’t dismissed out of hand at all. The Swans fully expect interest in a number of players as next weeks transfer deadline approaches. We have been told the Saints won’t get any change from twenty million pounds for the two players in question. Swansea City also fully expect to be involved in more player transactions as well. We can confirm the Swans have registered a loan interest in Spurs defender DJed Spence who at twenty three is finding first team selection very difficult. Ben Jacobs who reports for the ‘Last word on Spurs’ has stated, “As far as the Championship enquiries are concerned, my understanding is that they are for loans and there are three clubs that I would keep an eye on over the course of the next week if Tottenham decide to loan and Spence decides to drop down, and those three clubs are Swansea City, Bristol City and Leeds United.” Again that isn’t a surprise, the Swans are looking to strengthen, the issue with the information is Spence is a right back, and although a decent proposition - the right side of the pitch in defence is his preferred position. He joined Rennes in France in January chalking up eight appearances, he also earned an England under 21 call up. More to come over the next week or so for sure.
