Watford Reject Swans £11m Bid For Deeney? Surely Not?

The Mirror is reporting that we have had an £11m bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney rejected by the Premier League newcomers as both us and Newcastle up their attempts to lure the striker away.

Watford are naturally reported as wanting to keep hold of Deeney whose goals helped them to an automatic promotion place last season but the Swans have been linked with Deeney on previous occasions and it is now reported that we have made an official bid.

I am not sure that spending £11m on a striker this summer is on our horizon although nobody can doubt that we need a striker to provide competition to Bafetimbi Gomis. The difficulty is for me that if we were to strike a deal with Watford I would imagine that Deeney would want regular first team football on the basis that is what he is guaranteed at Watford.

At this point in time I just don't see how we can give him those guarantees and we know that Gomis will not sit back and settle for the odd appearance off the bench with the occasional start - his comments at the turn of the year before the sale of Wilfried Bony tell you that much.

On that basis I just cannot see why the Swans would have bid £11m for the player so therefore I am calling this as press speculation and nothing else. What you tend to see in these occasions is an agent deciding that it is time to up the interest in his player not necessarily to force a move but to try and secure a stronger contract for him at this current club.

My gut feel is that Deeney will play at Watford next season with a move this time next year more likely if he proves himself in the Premier League. At £11m (and rejected at that if true) then I'm not sure too many will take the gamble on him at this point in time.

Certainly not us anyway

I agree 100% and believe too that he will not get the space for opportunities in the Premier League as he did in the Championship. I asking price of the nature needs to go to those who have proved themselves at the highest leagues in the different countries as Bony did for example. I don't know what's going on in the Championship in demanding such hight figures for player who don't have the track record. I understand they want to get in on the act which is fair enough but who does live in dreamland? If he proves himself with Watford in the Premiership then it is expected those demands would be fair. There is a big difference between Championship football and Premier which goes without saying!
