Domain names 10:55 - Jan 2 with 1501 views | JamieSwan | Anyone know much about domain names? I was looking on here http://www.1and1.co.uk/web-domain just now and there seem to be a lot of new extensions out there but I'm wondering if it's better to go with one of the new ones and have your first choice of name, or stick with .com and use hyphens/numbers etc. Does it make any difference at all?

One of them is google - and you can be sure that they will want these new domains to be a success. Therefore, don't be surprised to see the google search algorithms tweaked so that the new TLDs get higher in the search rankings. If people finding your domain via searches is important to you, a TLD might be the way to go.

I had a cracking domain name for my business, choose a few years ago when the good ones were available.I spent a lot of money on websites, promotion, google ads etc.. Those idiots at Go Daddy made a mistake with renewal of the domain and suddenly it was up for grabs....within one day some American company hijacked it and held it to ransom.they demanded several thousand dollars off me to give it back...I made the decision to tell them to do one and choose another on principal ...as a result I have rebranded everything . If I click on that old domain now the cheeky sods have turned the landing page into a porn type thing about anal sex etc etc in order to discredit it and for me to give into them...it also has a sign on it saying this domain is available to buy! Moral....once you get a good domain be careful with renewals!

If you want to be in the internet business for the duration never, ever register your domain names through hosting companies. They are cheap but nasty in every sense, and you are likely to experience nothing but trouble if you want to move to an alternative hosting company at a later stage. Instead use a company that is primarily a domain name registrar like Network Solutions which I have personally used for 15 years. They are more expensive but you get a professional service. As for the original question, certainly at the moment you will get better market acceptance with a .com (/co.uk) domain name. That may change in the future, but if you want to make an immediate splash I would try to stick with that if you can find a reasonably snappy name.

If someone already has the dot com you want I would go for one of the newer extensions - .org, .tv etc. They are more likely to find you that way and there are some good ones that do make it look industry specific if that's what you're looking for.

Domain names on 11:22 - Jan 6 with 1250 views | OhRobbieRobbie | Hi Jamie, the new extensions will catch on, so grab yourself the best possible domain you can using the new extensions if I were you - you don't want a long extension with hyphens etc. Just for the sake of using a.com or .co.uk The only drawback at the moment with the new extensions is familiarity but that will improve with time. As far as search engine optimisation and search engines are concerned there will be no difference and using a new extension will not hamper you. Just go for the best extension that uses your most prevalent keywords if possible. I own a few good ones including Jack.Army :-)
