Swansea MPs table a Parliament motion of support for the Swans

Whilst many were totally conspicuous by their silence when the Swans were battling obscurity or relegation to the conference, the MPs have incredibly even tabled a motion in parliament of congratulations.

Of course the cynic in me says this is nothing more than cheap words to curry some favour and I apologise whole heartedly if they really do walk through the corridors of parliament wearing the latest shirts from Swansea City - hopefully they are on tenterhooks waiting for the Umbro offering!

Swansea East MP Sian James said "This is excellent news for Swansea City Football Club.

"I am delighted they have won the League One Trophy and on their receiving promotion to the Championship. My heartfelt congratulations go to Roberto Martinez and the whole Swansea squad."

Martin Caton said: "I think it is a tremendous result given where we were five years ago as a football club and how much we have come forward.

"From what I have seen of the team this season - and I often have to work on Saturdays - and what friends who go to the games each week have told me, they have produced some very entertaining football and at the same time achieve the results, which I think should send a message to football clubs everywhere that you can have both entertaining, attractive and achieve results. I hope the club can now build on their success and go from strength to strength.

"Everybody is talking about this achievement in Swansea, which is why I thought it was important to invite fellow Parliamentarians to pay tribute to their success down here in Westminster, an opportunity both Alan Williams and Sian James have taken up."

Swansea MP Alan Williams also offered his support, congratulating the Swans on a ''wonderful season of dominating football''.

Pope Benedict XVI was unable for comment
