It's Been A Fitting Send Off

Who would have believed that the last year at The Vetch would have turned out so well? It seems an age - well, it is really! - since we opened the season with a 2-0 defeat at home to Northampton and the predictions of doom first surfaced.

For months, we argued, bickered, supported and hoped that it would turn out okay and in the end Kenny Jackett delivered on a promise he made at the end of last season that they would give us a big season this time.

This season has been the proverbial roller coaster. It's hard to believe just how much was rammed into it. The few days after we crashed in the Carling Cup at QPR and the calls for Jackett to be replaced. That soon changed as the club built the foundations of what ended as a promotion season. The free flowing, goal glut around Christmas time that saw us score 12 goals in two and a half games - despatching Notts County, Kidderminster and Boston with some ease. The disasters of January and February that looked as if may kill the promotion hopes and finally the joy and celebrations from our last three games of the season.

As with all things Swansea City it has never been dull. We've had sendings offs, pitch invasions, arrests, player transfers and much more to mull over on the web site. A web site that has set new records virtually month on month ending in an incredible 213,000 page views in a single day last Sunday. Over 16 million page impressions on the site during the season alone. Would we have it any other way? I genuinely feel for some clubs in that life is simple and they win every week and sew up promotions and championships early - what the hell do they have to talk about? ;-)

We have celebrated the end of an era and said our goodbyes to the Vetch Field. We have done it the way we wanted, with a trophy to sit next to our promotion achievement. The Vetch got the send off she deserved and with it we all remembered the heroes that we have grown up with. And to White Rock we take a side that is on a high and a club that is moving in the right direction. More than 8,000 people crammed into the Vetch every week of the last season - seems a lifetime ago that we were taking part in crowds of just over 3,000. And it's a real difference from the 6,000 odd that watched games during the championship season.

There is now a real buzz around the club and finally this week more fans are experiencing the delights of White Rock Stadium. Having been there four times now to have a look around - the first as far back as last June - fans are finally realising that the pictures cannot do the stadium justice. As I sat in my seat when I chose it I still struggle to believe that this will be a view unobstructed by those big posts that have stood in my way all my football watching life and that finally I can see the whole pitch. I remember my early days on the North Bank as a youngster - I could see bugger all - the view never got better the older I got.

White Rock Stadium is simply the future. To anyone that has doubts about it then I say the people are the same - the atmosphere will be recreated if we want it to be. Just like we made the Vetch the way it was - we can do the same in the new stadium if we choose to. The club needed it if they were to progress and we have it. Now we have to make the most of it.

We have got to be thankful to Kenny and the players for delivering what they set out to this season. All the comments about dull football and not being good enough have now passed we were good enough - the league table shows that. I don't think any of us are under any illusions as to what we have ahead of us next season and I am already encouraged that the right actions are starting to be taken.

We have to remember though that we will not get every transfer target and that we may even lose some of our squad in the summer. The club MUST NOT be held to ransom by any player - be they current, past or hopefully future. If the price is right, pay it, if the price isn't then bye bye. This is OUR club and we are on a strong financial field. If you want to look at what happens when you pay over the odds then ask directions to Ninian Park.

It's been a great year - I've pretty much enjoyed most of it bar the results that haven't gone our way and as fans we have been rewarded with League One football in White Rock. Let's be happy and not let the pointless niggles come in now that the season has ended? Even though it appears they have already started!

JackArmy.net will be bringing you it's annual review of the season starting tomorrow and continuing Sunday and Monday Don't miss it!
